The Yoga of Human Design

Human Design is a new tool which can help you discover ultimate clarity by uniting the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of yourself into one powerful awareness.

Stop here for a moment, and think back to a breakthrough moment from your life. Go back to a time when your mind, body, or spirit broke free from all limitations, and everything came together with a feeling of absolute freedom and inspiration.

Question: What happened in that vivid memory? Why was it so illuminating for you?

As human beings, we have all felt this sense of “one-ness” during a peak experience. In a sudden flash, everything may have become clear, felt, or known. Whether you call the “flow-state,” whether you call it “God,” it’s a feeling of total completeness, as every thought and every molecule in your body hums together in perfect tune. But on a smaller scale in everyday life, these moments can show up when you find the right rhythm and timing–and everything just clicks.

Coherence is one word which can describe this sensation of pure alignment, as the mental, physical, and ethereal parts of yourself sync together into one presence.

Take yoga for instance. First, you need to settle into it, and then comes the tune up. And once you’re tuned up, from that in-bodied and expanding sense of coherent awareness, new insights and intuitions can begin to flow.

Many spiritual teachers have stated as much, in that a yoga practice is not about adopting a belief system or looking outside of yourself for answers, but rather, the practice itself represents the pursuit of the unified self–and it all begins with that felt sense of attunement. As you filter out the noise, and your brain waves and body waves begin to come together in tune, suddenly everything can align, and there you are, centered, clear, present––and renewed. That’s coherence, where the brain and the body connect–and acknowledge each other.

Next, let’s look at some of the negative impacts that can come from living an incoherent life.

  • Look for instances when your thoughts oppose your emotions, when your words do not match your actions, or when your logical justifications are at odds with your moral compass. Incoherence can show up when any piece of yourself is in tension with another. Within the body, incoherence can produce mental stress, anxiety, anger, depression, and physical pain. Even what seems like a minor internal conflict can eventually become systemic, and over the long term, can chip away at your well-being.

  • Incoherence between the mind, body, and spirit can cause so much unhappiness in life, but often we are told that a given conflict is “all in our head.” Unfortunately, people tend to buy into this, believing that discord, and its effects, are all mental perceptions. We tell ourselves that we should be happy, and we ought to feel good enough about the positive things we have, but humans are also quite good at using the mind to explain away underlying internal problems.

  • The precise trouble is that the human mind is so powerful, and so good at rationalizing away fundamental conflicts, that often we find ourselves bypassing the root cause of suffering again and again, even when it’s right in front of us.

Enter Human Design, the system which can offer anyone a fresh start because it teaches mind-body coherence first–and then becomes a vehicle for making better choices. And as a tool, like yoga, it offers the ritual practice of deconditioning which expands awareness and leads to a unified self.

If you are new to Human Design, it is a complex and advanced system of knowing yourself and your unique energy circuitry. In brief, Human Design gives you the personal operating system to your true nature. It helps you make better decisions more easily by helping you listen to exactly what your body is telling you.

But with all the mechanical details aside for moment, what is truly special about Human Design is that it offers you an opportunity to reset your mind-body relationship, because it declares the following:

Mental decision-making is the primary cause of most problems.

Think about this statement for a moment. On the contrary, we modern humans have been led to believe that using the logical mind to make important decisions is our most critical asset. The logical mind is what makes us human, separating us from the animal world of pure instinct. And furthermore, we’ve been taught to rely upon our logical channels, even when the energy inside our bodies may be shouting something at us which is entirely different.

For many people, the best example of this kind of incoherence shows up as a “gut feeling” which you ought to have listened to in a critical moment, but unfortunately, you ignored it, and instead you made that important decision using your mind alone. In this common scenario, overriding a strong gut response with logic can lead to disastrous and regrettable outcomes.

Logic is based in the past. Intuition comes from the present.

While it’s true that both logic and intuition are both critical faculties, ultimately, the analytical, problem-solving mind is not very good at making decisions about the future. That’s because logic is always based on past experiences, and therefore, it can’t predict the future. In this way, Human Design explains that the role of your mind is to be your central processor, and to perform the necessary analytics, so that you can size up a situation life throws your way. But in order to make your best decisions, you must gauge the moment–and listen to your body instead.

And so, the practice of Human Design is like the practice of yoga or meditation, because it aims to connect your mind and body to each other–with repetition–before you decide to do anything else. And just like any mind, body, or spiritual practice which fosters coherence first, you can’t force it.

Human Design asks you to be patient with your own inner rhythm, because your energy will align in its own timing. It asks for a deep acceptance of the body and its signals, so that eventually, making clear decisions through your body becomes downright obvious. With these internal shifts set in place, debugging old and incoherent patterns becomes much easier as well.

Tuning up and tuning into your operating system offers one clear benefit that doesn’t get talked about enough, which is that no matter your style of decision-making (your Authority), Human Design can help you receive better signals from your physical instincts moment to moment. Your body is filtering vibrations from your environment all the time, and so, as you learn to speak your own body's instinctual language more clearly, the force of mental override begins to soften.

And just like yogis feel strong energies circulating through their bodies, so too can you feel the flow of your instincts. Every person is wired a little bit differently, but by practicing your Human Design, you can eventually let your intuition speak for itself.

The coherence-first approach of Human Design may prompt some tough and life-altering questions initially–but that’s what makes it exceptional, and that’s why you came to find it. Human Design may ask you to have faith in the unknown and unknown timing as well, but the new found sense of freedom and control it promises is this: No matter what the people around you may be telling you, your Human Design can become your inner trust system, and your source of answers–for life.

The Skeptic’s Guide to Human Design is a blog dedicated to leaders and thoughtful skeptics who may be unaware of the system’s true depth and power. It repositions the knowledge as the paradigm-shifting, high-performance operating system for the soul that it was always meant to be. Whether you’re brand new to Human Design or already knee-deep in its language, this is a place to reconnect with its original purpose—and experience what it can do in real life.

In recent years, pop culture has turned Human Design into romantic fortune-telling—exactly what Ra Uru Hu warned it might become–so let’s set the record straight:

Human Design is the future of ancient wisdom: an awe-inspiring intersection of mysticism and mechanical dharma, offering a precise, reliable framework for living with greater clarity, purpose, and meaning.
