Human Design: Real Biohacks For Optimal Living
The Secret Growth Hack For Leading Minds
Smart leaders love to stay ahead with best practices, personal optimizations, tech—basically anything that promises an edge to keep them in the zone. But here's why you should pump the brakes on the constant improvement mentality:
Chasing optimization often means lots of trial and error, which only multiplies your odds for more misfires and eventual burnout. Trying to scale something up before you understand what’s going on at the core can risk turning small errors into systemic failures.
It’s only human nature to reach for a solution before you actually know what the problem is–or “what to solve for,” as Nike execs put it. (I've seen it a million times in life and business.)
Psychologically, successful hackery rewards mental bypassing, but short-changes inspecting the terrain first. Still, what’s wrong with trying out the latest growth hack to see if it gets you the desired result? Well, nothing actually–I do it all the time, but here’s my question:
How many growth hacks out there will deliver consistently for the rest of your life?
Almost zero by my count.
The Growth Trap Of Trial And Error
Whether you're into personal growth frameworks, or biohacking, or both, trial and error feels like an efficient process. It’s easy–and fun–to test out a new product with a “fail fast, fail often” approach to discover what works at a much quicker pace. Just try this new habit, pill, or treatment, and if it doesn't happen to work well for you, so what? On to the next experiment...
But how do you know when a hack is worth trying out, and when one will just be a waste of time? Check the reviews? Social proof? Of course. But eventually, it comes down to a small leap-of-faith, which is the main reason the growthhacker mentality can eventually leave you exhausted. That’s the double-edged sword.
But what if there was an entire personalized growth hack system that was designed specifically for you from the jump? One that came with a trial, but no errors?
And what if it also came with a custom made decision matrix, a leadership methodology, plus a number of “weirdly accurate” biohacks you could apply with zero guesswork?
The Biohack That Pays Dividends
No, Human Design is not another personality assessment or a vague “get to know yourself” framework. It’s not another famous person's behavioral theory attached to their New York Times best-seller. Instead, Human Design reveals your specific bio architecture plus simple, tangible ways to leverage it daily.
Think of Human Design as a way to biohack yourself, because it gives you high impact somatic shortcuts that pay dividends for life. Let me give you some a few examples from my own personal Human Design:
My Decision Maker
Human Design says that everyone should be tuning into their bodies to make final decisions, NOT falling victim to making choices with the mind alone. In a practical sense, once you can size up a situation and see clearly what’s going on, then go to your body for the final answer. Never assume you can decide what’s best for yourself with a long list of pro’s and con’s, because logic only ever makes sense in hindsight.
I have what’s called Emotional Authority–meaning emotions are my decision maker, but/and I also have to listen to my gut to make the right call ultimately. Not to make this overly complex, but when you add this to my Manifesting Generator Type, it means biologically, my decision-making process has these three layers:
Step 1: Make sure the data is in. If I’m confused about a situation or decision, my instructions are to wait for things to unfold. Simple. No problem there. Need more data? Go get it. No overthinking with a small sample size. Crunch the data instead of being impulsive.
Step 2: Now for the biohacking: My Emotional Authority instructs me to FEEL through my emotions to get to my truth about something. The majority of the world is wired this way (47% of people), and when I first learned this fact, it was alarming and a little bit scary to say the least, because I knew that making “emotional decisions” was BAD. However, I soon came to admit that I’d been suppressing my emotions quite often throughout my entire life, and often forcing outcomes to happen–because that’s what I’d been taught to do, even getting rewarded for it many times. “Making things happen” was how things got done in my world. Typical. But at the same time, I realized just how often those forced decisions were detrimental the end.
Then there was the revelation–In fact, all of my best decisions in life had come from irrationally following the truth I felt, even when it didn’t make sense until later. These included big decisions like moving to California, who I married, and so on. In other words, going through the emotional highs and lows of a possible decision always meant that if I followed the feeling, not necessarily in the beginning, but in the end, I’d end up in the right place.
Step 3: And finally, I learned something else about being a Manifesting Generator, which was that I also need to pay attention to my gut response, aka the Sacral Response, for moment-to-moment navigation, but not for final decisions. But how? Here’s the thing–everyone thinks they know what a gut response feels like, but in truth, for most people most of the time, thoughts, feelings, and senses are all mixed up and jumbled together. These things are hardly ever clean and discernable until you separate them. (No wonder so many people are confused about their own lives!)
But Human Design is the first system that breaks down the sensation of every single body intelligence with exquisite precision. Emotions, as it turns out, come from breathing–in and out, up and down, riding along the “wave” of feelings. Stop reading this and take a few deep breaths to see what I mean. And gut responses? They are actually sounds that you make out loud–grunts, sighs, and guttural “ughhhs.” A gut response YES sounds like “uh-huh!” or “hmmmmm,” as you literally move toward what you are in agreement with. On the other hand, a gut response NO stops you in your tracks and sounds like “uh-uh!” or “nuh-uh,” recoiling you away from what you disagree with. Stop now and try saying these out loud, or they won’t land with you.
Would it surprise you to learn that most people are “eating their words” all the time or actively suppressing these “sacral sounds”in an attempt to hide their true or socially inconvenient reactions from others? This clear distinction between felt emotions vs. gut responses fundamentally changed how I listen to my entire body, and how I make decisions in real time–especially in a public setting.
This stuff is definitely “energy work” that works.
My Consecutive Diet Strategy
The second true biohack that Human Design gave me was uncannily accurate. I have Active Digestion, which means that I fall into the 50% of people who should eat during the day, not at night, while the other 50% of people should eat at night with only very light nourishment during the day. (So much for the advice that everyone should eat dinner at 5 pm!) In addition, I need more calories than the night eaters to run my nervous system, which made sense of my lifelong large appetite and high metabolism.
But here’s where it gets wild. I have the “most primitive” of all the genetic instructions, which recommends a hunting and foraging approach to eating. I do best eating whole foods, cooked or raw, but I’m supposed to eat foods consecutively–and not move on to the next one until I’m done eating the first. Well, this matches exactly how already eat intuitively:
Picture a classic Thanksgiving dinner plate with turkey, stuffing, potatoes, green beans, you name it. I eat all the turkey first, then the stuffing, and so on–otherwise, if I mix foods together, they simply don’t sit quite as well with me, or not nearly as well as when I eat consecutively. Plus I enjoy savoring one thing at a time, no mixing. And yes, this horrifies the “mix and match” eaters out there, but it works for me.
Here’s another example: I love sandwiches, or used to think I did. So here was the biohacking experiment…When I eat a regular sandwich with multiple components, I crash afterwards into a minimum 20 min food coma, which, for most of my life, I thought was normal. (I used to think that there was something subtly pleasant about needing a nap after I ate…) But then one day after learning about my design, I experimented by eating a deconstructed sandwich so I could eat each ingredient separately, “charcuterie board style,” and something miraculous happened afterwards. No energy crash. No food coma. I didn’t skip a beat and could go right back to work with no temporary brain fog.
My “Dry Kitchen” Environment
For one last example, I could go in several directions, but I’m going with another piece of “bizarrely accurate, extremely useful” information, which is that Human Design predicts the kind of ideal environment you belong in. As human beings, we all have the opportunity to explore and move through different places in life. We all need up time and down time, but still, there is an ideal place for everyone, and one where you can be fully expressed and in your zone.
A Kitchen is Human Design code for communal places where new ideas are “getting cooked up.” As a creative architect who loves to talk about new ideas and fabricate new inventions, I’ve spent half my life in these “kitchens,” so this deeply resonated with me. People who have this designation also fall into either a “Humid Kitchen” or a “Dry Kitchen” category, which literally refers to the relative humidity in the environment. Even though I like the jungle, I would choose the desert over the jungle in a second if I had to live there longer term, and even more than that, the desert has always held a lot of spiritual meaning for me. (I’m actually living in the middle of one right now.) How did Human Design know that?
Permission To Go Native
Human Design is the bio awareness system that just makes sense. You’ll know it, because you’ll feel that tell-tale surge of energy within–confirming what’s true or not.
Yes, you have to try it for yourself of course, and there’s a trial run involved–but miraculously, no errors. It’s perfect for growth hackers because it makes a simple proposition: Modify your behavior and get consistent, tangible payoffs, plus practices that awaken and hone your natural signal calling. Train intuition, sharpen instinct, and feed the soul.
Once you see your operating system clearly, you can start training your new habits right away. It’s just a matter of repetition—which is actually enjoyable—because you finally get permission to do things your way.
And that’s why Human Design is so liberating, because it can help strip away everything that’s not working–reformatting the way you do life with a lean model that’s been there the whole time. You don’t have to try a million hacks to see what works, you simply receive and reboot the personal operating system that’s already programmed inside.
